History of Goldman Sachs

Marcus Goldman founded Goldman Sachs in 1869, and in 1880 his son in law named Samuel Sachs joined him. By 1898, Goldman Sachs had a capital of $1.6 million.

Goldman Sachs started trading on the New York Stock Exchange and issued first Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 1906 and also acquired Sears, and Roebuck and Company and Henry Goldman were pivotal in the deal as he was friend with Julius Rosenwald who was the owner of Sears. However, due to pressure from partners, Henry Goldman resigned in 1917. The Sachs family had the control of the Goldman Sachs until Waddill Catchings joined the company in 1918 and he had the largest stake by 1928. Goldman Sachs expanded to Europe at the end of the 19th century, and after the end of World War Two, the company had emerged as a leading investment bank

The Investment Banking division was formed in 1956, and the trading franchise was opened again in 1969. Goldman Sachs acquired a commodity trading company called J. Aron and Company in November 1981 and merged it with the Fixed Income division. In 1986, Goldman Sachs Asset Management unit was formed that mostly overlooks the mutual and hedge funds. The company strengthened its Trading Business Lines and launched paperless trading for the first time in NYSE.

Goldman Sachs's financial performance was badly impacted by the economic recession of 2007 and 2008. The company received a $10 billion investment from the US Treasury Department, which was given in November 2018 and was repaid in June 2009.
