What are commodities?

As one of the oldest existing markets, commodities cover numerous goods, that are traded for ages already. Easily divided into four groups, nowadays commodities are all about trading Energies, Metals, Livestock, and Agriculture. Basically, traders buy and sell a broad range of assets, including oil, gas, precious metals, and soft commodities like cocoa, coffee, sugar, and wheat. This market is known as a quite risky one due to its dependence on unusual weather patterns, epidemics, and disasters, both natural and human-made.

CFD trading on commodities

One way to invest in commodities is CFD trading. CFD stands for “Contracts for Difference” and means that trader never has to buy or sell the physical product. Neither has to invest in it directly. The goal here is to foresee the chosen asset price change on the market and try to benefit from it. Basically, this is a contract that pays the difference in the settlement price between the open and closing trades. Popular for short-term trades, especially for commodities and Forex pairs.

What are the most popular commodities?

Commodities are typically sorted into four broad categories with a couple of popular assets each. Metals commodities include precious metals, like gold, silver, platinum, and copper. Energies cover heating oil, crude oil, natural gas, gasoline, etc. Each of them is used worldwide on a daily basis, which turns into endless trading opportunities. Agriculture commodities, or soft commodities, cover corn, wheat, sugar, cotton, cocoa, coffee, etc. This particular market is known as one of the most volatile, especially during the summer months and any period of intensive weather-related periods. Livestock and meat commodities include pork bellies, live cattle, hogs, and feeder cattle. Still, this group is the least traded online.
